October 22, 2015 | Leave a comment Defense mechanisms are learned for self-protection. We don’t need to rely on these mechanisms for self-protection any longer since Christ has made us new creations and provides us with the Holy Spirit. Lying Denial (conscious or subconscious refusal to face the truth) Fantasy (escaping from the real world) Emotional Insulation (withdrawing to avoid rejection) Regression (reverting to less threatening times) Displacement (taking out frustrations on others) Projection (blaming others) Rationalization (making excuses for poor behavior). Defense mechanisms are also known as strongholds. They are fleshy thought patterns that were programmed into our minds when we learned to live our life independently from God. These take form in how we were raised, what was said to us, and we chose to believe, our worldviews that shape us etc… 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing rose up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought How can we unlearn what we learned before we became God’s children? Repentance. Simply seen as “a change of mind “or an “acknowledging” before God what you now know to be false and then asking for forgiveness, wisdom, knowledge, more understanding by the Spirit. We can be transformed because we now have the mind of Christ within and through the Holy Spirit we will be led to His truth. Even though we now are new creations in Christ we still live in a battlefield comprised of the world, our flesh and the enemy. This is why we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5. The enemy has privilege to our thoughts. He can control our thoughts with pieces of deception. What better way to lead us away from God then by giving us enough truth and sprinkling it with deception? So, if you don’t know the word of God, you can be easily deceived by what “seems or sounds right.” The battle for our minds involves more than just self-talk. It also involves listening to Satan without realizing it. When Satan tricked David into taking a census; Judas during the last supper; Ananias, when he lied to the Holy Spirit. These can come in the form of voices in the mind blasphemous mockeries, spurts of temptations to wallow in vile fantasy or behavior, persuasive lines of unbelief, condemning thoughts, difficulty reading the bible etc…all in the name of Spiritual warfare. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and he will make your paths straight. If you are having thoughts not of you and not of Christ, you are dealing with the enemy. If it is recurring thoughts of the old you or your old ways you are dealing with your flesh old nature. Flesh patterns are slowly replaced with God’s truth or are simply overcome by the renewing of our minds (taking thoughts to Christ). To do these, go to God in prayer asking for truth to replace lies and half-truths…and guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ. How? By reading the word of God and asking the Spirit to instill these truths in to your heart. When you are out of alignment with God’s ways and turn away from living Christ like, you will be taken advantage of. For example, if you cannot forgive, you will remain in bondage to that hurt or past circumstance. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. When we try to change behavior without also changing the way in which we think or believe will never produce lasting results. Focus on who you are in Christ, don’t worry about the devil and your authority over him through Christ. If you focus on who you are in Christ the enemy cannot set an agenda. Remember apart from Christ we have no authority or power over the evil one. “Believers have both the authority to do God’s will because of their position in Christ, and the power to do God’s will as long as they walk by the Spirit.” (Neil T Anderson). You cannot have responsibility without also having the proper authority. Have faith, Where does Faith Come from? Romans 10:17: “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (KJV). If you do not have faith, you can get it. How? By hearing. Hearing what? What God says in His Word. You must believe with your heart. Humility is confidence properly placed. boldness is the mark of a spirit filled believer-to be strong and courageous. God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). The opposite of boldness is cowardice, fear and unbelief. Dependence on Christ. As a non-believer- you are currently blinded from the truth; again privilege to the Enemy’s hand. This is why many do not want to believe in Christ or in God because until they choose to surrender and ask Christ to come in with a sincere heart, they cannot be shown the light of truth, it remains veiled. Satan has deceived the whole world. He is the Prince of the world. Satan is not an equal power with God; for he has been disarmed and defeated foe (Colossians 2:15). But he has the power to deceive us into believing he has more power and authority than we do, and if we succumb we will live as if he does. Taken From Neil T Anderson information.
